A gnarly ride!
The new normal pattern of the staggered start was in effect under clear skies, but strong, gnarly winds from the north east. Some gathered to start at Fol Epi while the other contingent assembled at Michell’s Farm avoiding the muddy horse trampled section just north of Lochside.
Those leaving from Fol Epi had a near miss at the piggery where 2 less experienced cyclists had decided to stop on either side of the trail. The Peloton opted to ride through the gap between the two when of them shakily crossed the trail without looking, or thinking.
When cycling along the section of the level section Lochside near Cy Hamspon Dog Park, the ride north was a full 10 kph slower than on when cycling that same section on the return ride - due presumably to the strong, gnarly winds. Pelotoneers had dressed for the conditions, so although there was a glow to their cheeks [on their faces], no one was cold!
Coffee was scheduled for the Institute of Ocean Sciences, where security was rigorous - without any ID, we signed ourselves in. Rather than go around the outside -except for Rusty- we opted to go through this building constructed in the 1970’s. We passed hallways marked "Restricted Area" but no door/ barrier/ guard prevented anyone (with no ID) from wandering in. Don't you love Victoria, we fiddle while Rome burns.
Topics of conversation included sad state of research funding both at university and BC Cancer Foundation, while Norm T shared his experiences of dining out in Molenbeek while based in Brussels.
Everyone looked forward to the ride home with the wind in our backs. Although the he wind made for a more rigorous ride, everyone enjoyed the outing. Thanks Norm T for organising.
Winter cycling certainly is tough in Victoria!!
