Winter Winds Continue
Seven riders (Dave A., Jack B., Rob H., Bob R., Norm T., Ian M., and Tom A.,) set out from Ogden Point under cloudy skies and a wind from the south-west that, despite the forecast, posed no great. problem John C., had indicated that he would also be there but the Peloton left at the appointed time without him, reasoning that he would catch up to us without much effort. Along the way the group halted to view a barge that had gone aground on the cliffs below Dallas, from where we also saw John cycling by, head down, ignoring our cries. We eventually all joined up, but John got a flat near Cattle Point and Ian and Tom went back to "assist". Despite the fact that John was managing the repair very well, gratuitous advice and encouragement was offered, which under the circumstances. is the best kind of assistance since it does not involve getting ones hands dirty. We all met for coffee at Starbucks which offered some shelter from the wind and threatening rain, that never materialized to any significant extent. The discussions were wide ranging, dealing with new and used car purchases and local dealerships, and the problems associated with disposing of a ten year old Jeep in Alberta. The conversation turned to pensions and Jack's observations regarding the conversion of an RRSP to a RIF account. In true scientific manner he used spreadsheets to analyze the minimum annual withdrawal options and the associated assumptions as to how the interest rates would affect these numbers.
Ultimately, it seems to mean that we are all in a lose-lose situation. The ride home was uneventful, no rain and the wind had (thankfully) shifted to give us all a little push.
