Olympic trivia, and other salacious stories
There was a massive turnout for today’s Peloton which started at Fol Epi with some hardy souls going to Sidney [David A., Dave N., Bob, Rusty and Doug] while others had a more modest goal of MattIcks [Norm T., James, Jeff, Ken W. x2, Cy and Norm L.].
There was a hint of fall in the air, but still a great day for a ride, despite the temporary appearance of marine cloud over coffee at Matticks.
Given the turnout, it was determined that we should not ride as one, but rather break up into smaller groups for safety reasons and as a courtesy to other trail users. The Lochside did not seem as busy as it has been in recent weeks - because school was back in????
The ride was uneventful, but enjoyable.
Over coffee there was some discussion of the election - with the prospect of a hung parliament, minority government or coalition being discussed. Given the goings on in a number of democratic countries other than Canada - Trump in the US, the party room rumble in Canberra with the PM being ousted, or the election of an old school radical as leader of the Labour Party in the UK, Norm mused out aloud about having a discussion on the whether democracy has run its course. Any prospect of a profound intellectual discussion were quickly squashed - instead there was a stroll down memory lane recalling scandal’s of the past - some remembered the Gerta Munsinger affair, while in Britain there was Mandy Rice Davies and Christine Keeler in the Profumo affair. And of course the famous photo
From scandal to sports - the conversation moved on the to sports, hosting the Olympics etc. with Hans being able to provide some “insider perspective”. Why is that most cities are left deeply in debt after the Olympics - Montreal, Athens etc. but on the other hand there is Sydney and Vancouver who both ran very successful events that did not leave the city bankrupt. This group could not be serious for too long - individuals recalled humorous Olympic moments - Eddy the Eagle and Steve Bradbury - both form the winter Olympics. Mmm.
Norm T reminded us to register our bikes with Vic PD - if you haven't already done so, you can go here and download a form
We hope that Norm T. had an awesome Field Picnic with his motoring buddies!!
